La Jolla Report 11-2-09 [My First Lobster(s)]
as soon as i got back from class this morning I got in touch with zorora and headed down to La Jolla to try to spear something.
Vis was doable but definitely not what it has been this past weekend, about 10-15' and milky. We were in the water for about an hour and a half and neither one of us saw anything worthy of a trigger pull, but diving's always fun and I got to meet another good spearo so it was worth it. I wanted to bring something home so I headed down to a different beach and jumped in, same 10-15' vis, and still no fish. But judging from the morning I had decided to leave my gun in the car and fill out my lobster card to see if I could finally bag my first bug. And so I did! I saw tons of shorts and missed several legal bugs because I still suck at this business. But I did end up with 3 legal bugs, and successfully nabbed the biggest one I saw. He was in a hole with 2 openings and I didn't even try to grab him from the front, I'm not ninja enough. But I went around the back and grabbed him from the rear and pulled him out, I was pretty pumped! Fish wise I saw a couple of barely legal sheepshead, a bunch of small bass and some good sized perch (which were far spookier than usual today). I also nearly face planted into a well camouflaged sculpin going into a lobster hole. Saw my second moray eel also, there was a lobster trap sitting right up on a ledge, it was empty but had a full bag of bait in it. The moray was halfway under the ledge chowing down on those guys bait... made me think twice about sticking my face/hands into some of those holes. I was also out when the fog rolled in, that was nuts! I've heard that it rolls in fast but it was within a matter of minutes. I dove down to check out a hole and then swam around for about 5 minutes, popped my head up and it was starting to get kind of foggy. I went back down, and was looking around under water for another 2-3 minutes, came back up and I couldn't see the coast ! It was a good thing I could see the waves starting to form because other than that, I could not see shit. It would be pretty freaky to be out in the kelp away from the waves and have some of that stuff roll in on you. Without a compass I don't know how you'd find the coast?Anyways great day, and it was good meeting you zorora, hopefully we dive again and see a little more life out there! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I still need to call you up and go diving with you. I didnt get a chance this past weekend and a little fearful right now that i may have gotten the flu from being out downtown for halloween. this weekend for sure i will be out there! i'm also looking for a night dive partner, so when you get a light let me know.

Sounds good man, I'm always happy to meet another spearo and more often than not I'll be free to hit the water. Best of luck on the flu and if we haven't already been on a dive by the time I get a light I'm definitely going to call you up.

QUOTE] If you have some sandy bottom, dive down and notice that the ridges in the sand will run parallel to the coast. That'll eliminate your guess of which way is the coast to 2 choices, directly back or directly away, which is then pretty easy to find. |

Hey thanks for the tip nilsonov, that would definitely come in handy.
Thanks Steve, I wish I could hit the water today but I have too much homework to be able to justify a dive. I'm pretty sure I'll be free this weekend though? |

I should have gone with you, I didn't get any HW done that day anyway. Good to see you got to eat that day. When the vis clears back up lets go again. I'm good for friday if nature holds up her end of the bargan.

WTF!....all right..stop going diving to two spots in one day!....and stop diving every day..you are a newbie and you are going to clean the spots for the idiots like me who have to work M-F! and dive on weekends only.
LOL..just kidding of course.Good Job, Ben. 2 sheepies, Bugs and other fish in the last few days. Good for you. ![]() My only little perch last weekend was more work to clean than anything else but I needed the practice. See ya. |
