Olympus 1030SW

My olympus 1030SW camera flooded the other day while diving and it is out of it's one year warranty. I'm sure some of you have had issues like this, did Olympic repair/replace the camera for you?

Re: Olympic 1030SW

good luck. my ex gf had one. it broke so they took it in to fix it, the loaner camera they gave her had the same problem with leaking and they charged her full price for it. ultimately an error of someone at the store she bought it at ended up refunding her money but I've heard of lots of people having problems like that.

Where did you buy it, you might have better luck, she got hers at frys I think.

Re: Olympic 1030SW

killed 2 770sw models so far

opted for the cheaper fuji that's waterproof to 3 meters this time since itll die/flood anyway. would rather spend 180 than 380

if you really want waterproof, buck up and get a good housing or go real cheap IMO

Re: Olympic 1030SW

I do a fair amount of UW photography and in my experience the only way you can protect yourself is to insure your rig. 1st you have to be a member of DAN, which IMO every diver should be anyway for their dive insurance. They're partenered with an UW insurance provider that I have my WHOLE Sea&Sea housing set up insured through and ALL my dive equipment. They insure it against floods, theft, and most everything else worldwide. The only thing they don't cover is loss of equipment underwater.

Yes I do, thanks. The insurance would be a good idea but at this point I would just like the camera fixed and then I probably wont dive with it but rather just use its waterproof ability as protection against using it in the pool or taking to the beach. I had read reports of people having theirs break and mine worked great until now, which has been about 2 years, so I was hoping that mine was one of the "lucky" ones.

Re: Olympic 1030SW

I just flooded mine for the second time. The first time it was under warranty and they replaced it, this time they want $116. to fix it. Follow the instructions on the website and send it to them and they will contact you via email and tell you how much it is to fix, or you can call them and set up a repair order number and send it to them. Once they fix it, it has a warranty on the fix for 6 months. I am going to get mine fixed and before the 6 month mark maybe buy a housing for it.

K - buy the housing. This is the best of all worlds.......... Reality is most of us dive deeper than the 30 ft the 1030 is designed for ............ It's really just for surface swimmers........ With the case and the 1030 - when the case leaks (not if ->when) - you camera will probably survive, at least a much better chance of survival than a non water resistant cam in a case.

Buy a Gopro Hero and save the Olympus 1030 for pics on the boat....

Re: Olympic 1030SW

I had planned on getting this camera for freediving, because it is "waterproof" to 33ft. But after reading the reviews, (ok my wife read them, she researches everything before buying) I saw a lot of people reporting flooding of this "waterproof" camera even in shallow water.

So, I went with the 1050SW, up to 10ft. I figured the "waterproof" is more for my carelessness around water with my camera, then to dive with. It was $149, looks like they jumped up to $199.

Re: Olympic 1030SW

You guys are REALLY wasting your money buying these shitty little cameras. It sounds like 50% of them get flooded anyway. Get Sea&Sea, Aquatica, or Subal for UW photo, and Gates or Light and Motion for Video. Sea&Sea makes awesome point+shoot rigs also!

For more info check out www.wetpixel.com - it's everything you'd want to know about UW photography and cinematography. Both techniques and equipment.

How much are such cameras? I have another point and shoot with housing that I use for underwater or diving etc. This Olympus is perfect for what I do, kayak fishing, boating, ie splash proof.

Re: Olympic 1030SW

I think the Sea&Sea DX-2G is about $1000 for the camera and housing.
http://www.divervision.com/catalog/p...roducts_id=987

Waterproof to 180 feet.

I would check out the wetpixel.com classifieds section and maybe ebay and check out the older models. You can probably score one for half that price.

For a professional rig though you're looking at $15k-40k (brand new gear). It's pretty ridiculous, but the camera body, lenses, ports, arms, strobes and all the other crap REALLY ADDS UP. Then you really do want to get H2Oinsurance.com for it. $20k worth of gear has a premium of about $500/year and no deductible, so for a $1k rig the costs will be VERY affordable and very much worth it.
