Re: newbie spearfisherman
Do some research online. Tons of good guns out there. A lot of people like Mako for the price, product and customer service. Personally though I think starting with a polespear is a great way to go. Aaron Crist makes an awesome pole spear and is a great guy to deal with (see link in my signature). You can dive most of laguna except the heisler park reserve, look on the DFG website for the coordinates and where it covers. Try out different spots is your best bet. Shaws cove is always popular though...
Check here and read some reports and then decide where you wanna go.

Re: newbie spearfisherman
110 is a little bit big in my opinion. especially if he has never shot a gun before.
90cm is the best overall shoredive size for a new diver in my opinion. |

FWIW, I'll second the Mako guns. If I don't get a 75 cm gun for Christmas that I asked for (or some other interesting deal comes along), I'll probably be buying a Mako in a 75 cm. I have a Mako 100 now and want something as a hole gun. -Brent |

Re: newbie spearfisherman
I say go bigger, you'll want more later, and buying a second, smaller gun is easier on the wallet down the line. Good luck, and welcome to SB.

JBL = Gun you will hate Mako = Better Search Button = Your best friend for newbie questions ![]() Open/Closed Muzzle = Does not make a single bit of difference for a new diver. Size = 90-110cm Laguna = Soon to be closed for diving forever so maybe save money and take up rollerblading. |

Re: newbie spearfisherman
I agree. Don't get a JBL. 90cm is best. 100cm is also very good and my personal favorite for shoredive reef work. 110 your going to be blunting and bending a lot of shafts when shooting in the rocks.
Next time use search. Every question you have has already been answered.

As to which other guns to buy?? A lot of the euro guns are basically all the same as to feel. As to durability, there are some issues with most of them in one form or another. Do a search on the guns. Maybe ask about posts DELETED about the failures of certain guns. The list of tube guns that are accurate and proven is long; RA, Aimrite, Hammerhead, Omer, Picasso. As for the pipe guns I have used, and therefor I can judge which ones to recommend??? Picasso, Rob Allen, Hammerhead, and Omer. Not saying I haven't used the other guns.... I am being nice, and saying that with my experience, the guns I listed are guns that did not have serious problems with them. ![]() As for what goes in my board when the chips are on the table?? A Riffe euro 90 is my #1 choice for local diving in Laguna. My dirty water gun is a Hammerhead 75. My open water gun is a C-4 Riffe.
