Re: Start a garden

This reminds me of a show on PBS I watched today about the 1919 outbreak of Influenza.

Figues could be off but I think I remember them saying 195,000 people died in the month of October 1919 in the US.

Mass graves in Philly. Bodies laying in ditches and being left on front porches for the body cart to come by and pick them up.

I have asthma and didnt' get a flu or H1N1 shot so I'm at a higher risk but I should have and we should all be prepared for emergencies.

I agree with the idea though.

Re: Start a garden

Anyone in hurricane, tornado, or earthquake country (~ 80% of the US land area) should have AT LEAST a month worth of non-perishable groceries at all times. I try to do a bit better than that. Mormons and a few other denominations generally have a year or 2 worth of rations stored, which is not a bad idea either.

Don't forget the water maker. RO devices are a GOOD thing.

How much food is a year supply? Mostly canned food?

I guess you could buy a year supply of Ramen noodles for about 27 bucks.

I'd like to kick it up a notch and have a full year on hand, this thread has reminded me to get that in gear... Also need to update our 72 hour backpacks that have everything you would need to survive for 72 hours, somthing you can grab and go with quick...
My friend always says the best plan is to stock up with guns and ammo and a list of Mormons in the area. Apparently they are all supposed to be stocked up with food rations.

Interesting....almost a closed looped system, eh? Do you have any easily understood comparison of waste byproduct vs. consumables?
What sort of money does it take to get a system like that going for a household? Is it feasible?

No sh*t, what hey pass of for fruit and vegetables at the local grocery store would have killed my grandmother. I try to buy from local farmers when I can but they seem to keep getting replaced with Ikea's and sub-divisions up here.

Its a total close loop aside from evaporation. You can grow a tank of duckweed above the fishtank and scoop it out daily to sun dry and use that to feed the fish negating the need for feed. A proper system would have no consumables. When I cut down a plant I throw the wasted part in for the fish.

I prefer to build my systems from easily available garbage materials. The pump is the hard part if you don't have access to moving water. Ive done them with salt water species and sea grasses as well.

For a family of four the cheapest would be 5 IBC tote containers cut up. With pump you would be out less than $300. Theres a bunch of links on the blogs for DIY style. Thanks for the interest, makes for easy spearfishing.

Re: Start a garden

I'm thinking about starting one. I think it would be an interesting endeavor and would also be a great learning tool for my young nephews I'm taking care of. The way this country is headed they may very well need this education.
