Re: What's the reason for not allowing spearing for certain fish and in freshwater?

There is some freshwater spearing allowed on the West Coast but not much. In Washington you can spear carp without needing a license, but that's all you can shoot. In Oregon you can shoot carp plus...

Looking for custom (short) spears

I've got a 30" mid-handle that I use for carping and short viz, and I've been getting custom shafts from Neptonics as not many folks are making 32" spears. The problem is that the shafts are only...

Re: Closed-cell vs. open cell wetsuit

The unlined suits are warmer because when you submerge the air is forced out and the suit sticks to your skin, preventing water from circulating between the skin and the suit as it does in a surf...

Re: Big ass carp

I found this page to be pretty useful, though it doesn't mention spearing in particular

Re: Big ass carp

It's on page 15 of the pamphlet, under general freshwater rules. The good news is that in Washington you don't need a license to spear carp, there is no closed season, no minimum size, and no bag...

Re: Big ass carp

If the pics are of bass that were speared, best that they don't load...not legal in Washington or Oregon. If they were hook and line, let's see 'em!

A question for AB Biller owners...

While finishing up a dive the other day I unloaded my Biller and noticed that the slip ring (a.k.a. stop ring) was missing from the spear. The spear tip was still attached, neither of the two tabs at...

Re: Washington: Surfing suit over a freedive suit

I dive in a 7mm and have yet to be cold, even off the Oregon coast in March. In fact, I generally flirt with heat stroke any time I'm wearing the suit out of the water.

After June, you could...

Re: Burliest gloves?

I recently received a pair of the upgraded Mako gloves with the covered stitching. I haven't had a chance to get them in the water yet, but my initial impression is that the latex should solve the...

Re: Burliest gloves?

I got a pair of Ullr gloves in the mail the other day. They've got rolled (internal) seams on the fingers, so that's a good start. The reinforced fabric on the palms has exposed stitching, but...

Re: Burliest gloves?

I picked up a pair of the Mako gloves last spring. They lasted for 10 or so outings before the exposed stitching wore through and the seams on the fingers separated. It seems like external stitching...

Burliest gloves?

I'm looking for recommendations for the toughest, most abrasion resistant gloves available. I've already got some dyneema gloves but I'd like something a little warmer for here in Oregon. I would...

For the record, I wasn't seasick. I was, however, exhibiting many of the symptoms.

Gonna try a scope patch for next time.

Re: Spearfishing halibut???

Ian, here's a pretty good site http://www.animatedknots.com/prusik/ The article recommends 5 or 6 mil cord, I incorrectly wrote 2 mil previously. And of course, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prusik

Re: Spearfishing halibut???

A prussik knot in a 2' loop of 2 mil cord will also work as a clutch on a float line and is about as cheap as you can get. It's an easy and useful knot for anytime you want to be able to hold tension...
