New Here (don't look away!)
Hello all, I'm Abel and I've recently become hooked on spearfishing/freediving. I live in Brooklyn, NY, but have speared a few times in the Gulf by Tampa and in North Carolina...I'm a brand newbie and I'd appreciate any advice, contacts even more so being that I cant seem to find places or people locally that spearfish. I'm willing to travel. I also admit I was very worried (afraid would be more accurate) trying this in NC because of the talk of Great whites (I know the likelihood of an encounter is minimal) but couldn't help it being that I'm not used to 2-3 feet of visibility.
I just want to learn....don't spear me down, show me the ropes. I believe I have adequate equipment, one 5mm wetsuit, one cressi 3.5mm wetsuit, mask, snorkel, dive knife, Atomic fins but will purchase freedive fins, float with a dive flag, and a 50ft omer floatline. Little about myself, im a 24yr old male, in great physical shape due to MMA competition. I'm around 2:40 static time breathold. Currently doing/learning welding, fabrication. (Not so good for the lungs). Thanks everyone, so who's ready and willing? |

Re: New Here (don't look away!)
Thanks, will do, but knowing myself I probably won't wait that long... Gotta get more experience under my belt. I read that most freshwater spearfishing isn't allowed most places around NYC, anyone know

Re: New Here (don't look away!)
Welding is shitty for your lungs, regardless of what you do. However, one of the best divers in New England is a welder. You have to make a living! Welcome aboard

Re: New Here (don't look away!)
You're going to want to upgrade that fast, but you'll be ready to go as soon as the water warms up a few degrees. Welcome aboard and good luck.
