Zeagle BC

Hi Guys.
Well, after 15 years of great use, Ive got a hole in my BC..
Not really sure how it happened (might of been that unruly 7lb.bug I was fighting with).... Non the less ,I am trying to find a good way to fix it. Thought someone here may know of a way... So far the only thing that I can think of is 3M 5200.
any ideas ??

Re: Zeagle BC

For DIY repair..
Get a small scrap of SunBrella from a canvas shop, Cut it big enough for a patch. Place it over the hole and put masking tape around the patch to outline where it will be placed.
Buy some Aquaseal and the Cotel hardener from on line or dive shop
I see Amazon has it;

GEAR AID Aquaseal FD Flexible Durable Repair Adhesive and Cure Accelerator for Fixing Holes and Rips in Waders, Wetsuits and Inflatables

https://www.amazon.com/Gear-Aid-Aqua...65&sr=8-2&th=1

BE SURE TO USE LOTS OF THE HARDENER , that makes it plyable. Coat the area of the BC and the patch and apply.

I'd do the same thing ( Seatux Inc ) but with a commercial wetsuit glue ( which is not for sale to the public BTW)

Re: Zeagle BC

I've seen it all, as far as DIY wetsuit repairs go. Lots or Ruined wetsuits!
And Aquaseal has Ruined Many a wetsuit.
The issue is, it dries hard as a rock, and people glob it on.
The additive not only makes it less runny, and dry faster, but keeps it pliable and flexible.

I often cut Sunbrella with a "hot knife" Which melts the edge so there is no unraveling. You can treat the edge with a flame from a lighter and do a good enough job.

This is an Easy repair, you should have no issues.

Re: Zeagle BC

thank you for the reply,,, sorry it took so long....
I agree, aquaseal did not work well on my 8mil suit, i was very dissapointed with its performance ...
I know there is better glue out there but i am unable to find it.. Now you say that I cant buy it ? WTF. That's not right ! My 8 mil is a wreck, some areas the material is completely collapsed...so I tried gluing large 3mil patches over the bad spots..the aquaseal failed terribly...and the 5200 was even worse , to my surprise.....
I know I should buy another but its not easy to find one that fits me,,this one was sent to Texas for custom alterations.. And im getting too old for this shit!
I will look around for that sunbrella but I've never heard of it..

thanks again

Re: Zeagle BC

Sunbrella is just a marine grade canvas, used for Bimini's and T tops, etc. You don't have to use that brand, it's just that its a good grade of material, and like the material your BC is made of, it doesn't "breath" so it makes a good patch.
As for wetsuit glue, most dive shops carry some, it isn't as good as the professional grade, but it isn't as detrimental to you health either, and it works good enough for most DIY repairs.
I think your best bet is still Aquaseal with the catalyst , I believe it is called COTOL-240.
If you cant find the COTOL catalyst don't use the Aqualseal without it!
At that point go to a dive shop and find some neoprene cement, if you have a choice get one that comes with a brush top can, not the tubes!
You can find it on Amazon, Trident is a good DIY brand.

Re: Zeagle BC

This is an easy repair, I'd do it for about $25 if you brought it to me. But to ship it both ways is insane!
PM me tho, I will mail you a Sunbrella patch cut to fit, N/C. Then you can order the Trident Glue.
Using neoprene cement requires a procedure. In your case you will need to apply several coats to prime and build up the area till it is no longer sucking into the material. A mistake everyone makes is trying to put things together while the glue is still wet, I know, that is how MOST glues work, but not Neoprene. You need to Wait till it is Barely tacky to the touch, then assemble and apply using great pressure to the area to fuse it.

Re: Zeagle BC

thanks again the offer of help.....
Using This Glue sure is complicated, but I don't doubt using it correctly will have much better results .... My 8mil alteration seams are still holding . Looks like she used some kind of brown glue,, it must be good stuff !
Well, yesterday, for better or worst I threw some 5200 on that BC ..
I figger it will hold or it wont ,, if not,, then go to plan B

A few years ago I bought a big can of that glue , used a little of it, then after letting it sit over the summer, it was totally ruined... Left a bad taste in my mouth for that krap...
