Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Sunday 9/25: dove 2 ledges WSW of Clearwater Pass. Dive 1: 80 fsw, vis appx 40-50ft, top and bottom temp 84. Dive 2: 67 fsw, vis appx 30-40ft, top and bottom temp 84. Both dives we saw some keeper grouper, hogfish and mangos. Caught 1 spiny lobster on Dive 2. Legal too, lucky me! No lionfish and lots of tropical and juvenile fish. Many large stingrays aggregating (mating season?), moon jellies and a few big pink/brown nasty jellies (long tentacles and known to have a bad sting). No signs of red tide or gumbo on either dive. Seas choppy up to 1-2 ft on way out, smooth on the way back to port. Good day on the water.

Was also pleasantly surprised with no lionfish on my 4 dives on Sat.

Viz in 60 fsw was crap in the morning on 10/9/21 out of Clearwater. Maybe 10 foot. Very dark. Jellyfish. Plenty of fish to shoot, but tough to see em. Moved out to 80 fsw. Viz was 40 foot. Came back in and did one more dive in 60 with sun high, viz still dark. Only 13-15 foot. Lot of fish still.

Sweet! I've caught hundreds of them in the Keys but never seen one up here. Nice report, thanks for posting!

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Saw the same thing as pervious post on 10/9 out of Tampa Bay Manatee. Very thick pea green layer on the top of the water which made everything very dark at the bottom in 50-80 ft. Felt like a dive at dusk/night. Went out to 90 feet and saw much better vis. Lots of big moon jellies

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Out west of John’s Pass freediving on Saturday, October 9. Stayed within 30’ depth. Water temp was 81°. Viz was crap but it reasonably fishy. We shot a few gags, a cobia and some mangroves. Lost a 50lb cobia that pulled off the shaft after a big fight to keep it out of the culverts. The one we got in the boat was much smaller.

Dove SW of Clearwater Pass in 80 fsw. Calm winds and very smooth seas on the way out. Red tide fish kills evident from 3 mi to 15 mi out. Water was green/brown on the surface. After that water cleared out to dive sites with clear blue water on the surface with flying fish in 80 ft. Splashed in, horizontal viz was good, appx. 30 ft. Descending down anchor line hit green then brown cloudy water all the way to the bottom. Horizontal viz reduced to 15-20 ft. Large stinging jellies with 20 ft tentacles present near the surface upon ascent and at the safety stop. Thinking water quality and viz may be better to the north.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

It was better. Mainly dove in 95' and viz was 40-50'. Moved in and did one dive in 85' and viz was still bout 40'. 83 degrees. Mainly just moon jellies. Noticed red tide on way in about 7 miles out from Clearwater pass as far as some smell and some floating dead fish. Lot of bait seen on the surface in that 80' zone.

Dove Sat out of Clearwater pass in 80-100 fsw and same deal. Came in and did a dive in 68 fsw and water was darker but still shootable. 25' viz. Some jellyfish still around.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Took my nephew out for a tune up dive at 40' deep, went out to 7 mile reef (the north one) out of Anna Maria last Monday May 16th, visibility was outstanding, 20-30' horizontal, about the same vertical. Water temp ~78, nice without a wetsuit. You could make out the rocks and sand from the surface.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Thoughts on what viz in 30-50 feet depth due west of NPR/Pasco for tomorrow? I know the waves were a bit kicked up down in Pinellas the last few days, but haven't heard much about up here.

Dove up that way today. Viz was about 15' in 50 fsw. Temp 85. No gumbo was nice. Lots of fish. Viz was less shallower.

Thanks, Dave. We decided to not go given that I had 3 novice spearos with me and figured MY definition of "acceptable" viz would not be ideal for them, plus I was concerned with the lingering effects of all the rain and wind from yesterday afternoon and evening.
