Tohatsu vs. Yamaha Outboards
Looking at buying a new Tohatsu vs. Yamaha 10hp Outboard motor and wondering if anyone has any good or bad experience with either motor? The Tohatsu is 500 bucks less than the Yamaha and weighs about 5 pounds less, which is a big factor when hand carrying the motor down to the beach by yourself! Thanks!

Tohatsu in my opinion, I also think it comes with a better warranty.

Re: Tohatsu vs. Yamaha Outboards
Well I ha rnt heard anything bad about them. Every engine is only as good as the owner treats them. But for a skiff, that's what I would be running!

Tohatsu.
I don't see the added value that Yamaha brings to the table in that size engine based on their cost. I do believe Tohatsu makes small engines for a bunch of manufacturers too. I had a 9.8..never a problem. Now I have a 20 so far so good. Most small 4 strokes will probably not disappoint you, so why not save the money?..mi 02 cents. |

Re: Tohatsu vs. Yamaha Outboards
My buddy's 9.8hp tohatsu has been going FOREVER
It lives on a boat on the beach and has never been flushed, hell I doubt its ever been serviced. Thing is over 10 years old and still fires up first pull and has never had a problem. Yamahas have a great track record of their own too though.

Re: Tohatsu vs. Yamaha Outboards
I picked up a new 9.8 Tohatsu about four years ago to get my gradson more into boating and not just a "boat rider". The motor has been used in salt water 100% and has worked very very well. I also had a new 10 hp Mercury before that on another boat and it too worked well, the Tohatsu 9.8 has a little less power when at WOT than the Mercury did but in general I like the Tohatsu much better. Bouth are two strokes (I like the smell of oil mixed in salt water) keep in mind that Tohatsu makes all the small HP Mercurys too. My friend next door has a Yamaha and and he has had no problems with it. I think it all comes down to price. Just like ANY motor used in salt water you need to flush it and clean it with fresh water after every use if you want it to last a long time. Lower gear oil changes and lots of fugging oil inside and out works well too!
