Gear question...
Hey guys, I am agonizing about whether to break down and buy a dang speargun for this upcoming ling cod season. I just came back from a weekend dive trip with my SeaStinger pole spear with slip tip and didn't have much trouble with poking the rock fish. But I'm wondering if I need a gun to hunt ling cod effectively? This is really my first experience with Pacific Northwest spearing but I was amazed at how close range the shots are, so I feel golden with my pole spear... Of course, I don't want to botch a chance on a 20 pound ling either...

Re: Gear question...
Heck, I would keep using the Sea Stinger until a fish gave me a reason to buy a speargun. Maybe switch to a heavier tip, like the Sea Stinger 2 or 3, first.
If you really want a nice speargun, I know of a carbon 70cm Rob Allen that may be exactly what you need. PM me if you are interested.

Re: Gear question...
Your pole spear will work fine for lingcod. Lots of big lings have been taken with them. If you are proficient with it, then stick with it. You can get plenty close enough to them to take them with your pole spear.

That's all I use. But I don't kill anything huge.

Re: Gear question...
Great advice... Thanks for the reassurance with the pole spear, I will keep using it until I embarrass myself enough to buy a small gun!

Re: Gear question...
A 19.7 lb lingcod was taken at the 2010 Triton X spearfishing competition with a pole spear. I would suggest that you not use a paralyzer tip, but a single point with a flopper for better penetration. A big ling will tear off of a 3 point paralyzer tip, but a single point with a flopper will go clear through them and hold them.

Re: Gear question...
Which model Sea Stinger? A couple of the Sea Stinger polespears are designed to hunt a lot bigger game than Ling Cod.

Re: Gear question...
I have an original Sea Stinger bought about 7 years ago, with some awesome slip tips so I have had good success with it. I would like to have one of their newer versions that break down. It's tough shoving an 8 foot pole spear in the car that doesn't break down!

Re: Gear question...
Do you use a float line? If you get a shot on a log of a ling, a floatline might help you land it, and keep you from loosing your spear. All the lings I've shot i could have taken with a pole they were so close.

Re: Gear question...
Got a 24# ling with a pole spear a couple years back (home made out of ski poles -
good aluminum and about 5$ at Goodwill). Just be ready to wrestle/gill grab the critter. Made a single barb straight point for holes but its tough to get the point all the way through if the fish is too far back or facing head on. |
