Ponce on the Gator Bait 7/10 PB

Headed out with Dad for the first time in a month. Wasnt expecting too much, just was excited to get back after it.

Heading out the ocean was less than a foot. First dive hit a wall of snot at 60 ft that was so thick I thought it was the bottom at first. Figured it was going to be one of those days. Swam on down and at 70ft it opened up. We were diving 100ft and the vis there was 30ft. Saw a grouper under the ledge and he just sat there and looked at me. The vis was so clear I thought I was hallucinating. POW. Pulled him up and he turned out to be a personal best! There was another scamp in the cave who just sat there while I reloaded. POW, in my bag too. Great dive for me.

My other dive I only managed a couple triggers and as I was coming back to the boat I was thinking how glad I was to have had such a good first dive. Then at about 30ft here come the cobias. POW, fish down. My shaft didnt make it all the way through the fish, and he ended up sliding off. Thank god for the powerhead. I had to chase him all the way back down to the bottom.

Other dives were non-eventful. I managed my PB grouper, who was 29lbs gutted and the cobia may have been a PB, too close to tell, and I cant ever remember weights, but he was 20lbs gutted. I also managed to shoot more meat than dad today, which never happens. Guess if we had one I could have put on the white jacket!

The report... in 100ft vis is anywhere between 15 and 30 ft. Temp was 61 and little current. My advice... get after it boys!

God Bless.

WTG... Congrats on the PB. Some people would have not gone to the bottom to check the vis. Congrats again.

TJ got the big ones yesterday...there I said it! We won't talk about quantity though!

Anyway, Russ, nice job on the grouper, 29lbs gutted is a very nice fish & that scamp is not too shabby either! Way to stay with the cobia too!

Re: Ponce on the Gator Bait 7/10 PB

Thanks everyone for the congrats. I think it was one of those days where if I had brought a buddy with me or a new diver they would think diving offshore here is a piece of cake. You just show up, jump in the water and shoot big fish. I think all of us know better, which is what made it so fun. Not very often (at least for me) do you get a nice ocean, good visibility, and plenty of fish to shoot. For me, usually two of those elements are missing at all times!

That trip got the fever going again for me. I'm on vacation for a week starting the 19th, so I'm hoping to make at least a couple trips that week. Praying that the visibility sticks around til then.
