Of Squid and early Catalina Gamefish
...Some good news: There is an influx of squid off the Isthmus area of Catalina on the frontside. Chances are, there are seabass in the mix. Me? I would work Eagle Reef/ Lion's Head where the squid are concentrated. Some yellowtail have been there constantly all year.
... I speared my largest yellowtail off Lion's Head years back while lying on a reef edge at 45'. It was over 60 pounds and took me down from 45' to 70' before I could let go of the line. The giant yellow was headed for kelp strands to wrap and my efforts to shortline the fish failed. It wrapped twice, ripped loose and was gone; a big disappointment for losing such a magnificent specimen. Out of air, I was on the edge and my ascent made for a long trip upward...... ...Even better news, is the sighting of 10 different boils of Bluefin tuna off the east end last week while the guys were fishing deep with anchovies. The Bluefin never departed our waters. It could be another banner year if the water temps and abundance of baitfish hold steady.... ..Tomorrow, I am off to Bay Harbor to try to work a deal on a waterfront home with 35' boatslip....Working it out for a win-win on both sides will depend on whether I can keep the property taxes the same as before....That would mean purchasing the boat slip as a separate transaction, which would reduce the cost of the home about $100,000...Then, if I can get the owner to carry paper on the 20 percent down payment until I can sell my home, we may have a deal (OPM and some creative financing!....If not, then, my wife is demanding I find a couple of boat partners....(She says) I am getting too old for solo launches at the boat ramp and definitely, solo diving.... Never say, "I can't do it" and don't hang with people who think like that....Always ask yourself, "How can I do it" and hang with positive people who think likewise.... Re: Of Squid and early Catalina Gamefish
Postscript to home with boatslip.....be careful what you wish for; you may get it....the sellers accepted our terms....but....my wife got cold feet for several reasons...the old guy having to climb stairs on a two-story vs our one story easy entry home...the kitchen needed remodeled and she loves our new kitchen.... monthly homeowners fees would have raised our monthly payment $700 and she wants to retire from working... and, lastly, we have a great view and very walkable neighborhood vs homes side by side in a gate guarded community with limited views.....long story short, we decided to stay put in a neighborhood we love....all those years looking at waterfront area homes and we decide to stay put?? must be old age senility.....
A happy wife means a happy life...once a month anyway.... |

Re: Of Squid and early Catalina Gamefish
$700 a month you can buy a lot of gas and stays in some really nice hotels at Catalina.
Sounds like you're in a really nice area now. Congrats on having a nice home in a nice area. |

I used to think that also. That was before current numbers of 2.4 m.p.g. per motor, and running 30-50 miles offshore, constantly! Pretty sure Bob's getting similar with that Parker.

That's why I like my little 18 Seacraft. 3 MPG all day on an old smoker. Of course I need to pick my weather windows a lot more carefully than you guys.
