What Inflatable Kayak should be for Ocean?
Hi, I am currently looking all over and searching for info about INFLATABLE kayak for Ocean. ( No place for real Kayak)
I read a lot and understand that for ocean I need longer kayak. If any of you guys have experience with Inflatables please describe how kayak should be? 14-15' or more in length ( i want convertible ( solo or two paddlers) because right now I am in Chicago and spearfishing all the time alone, but soon I will be in California and Maui, Hi How wide it should be the yak to survive in crazy weather, high winds, strong currents, high waves ( currently in Chicago waves are no more that 6-7 fit) Any info would be very helpful!!! : There is couple kayak that I think might work for ocean , but I don't have any experience with theme yet except reading. 1. http://www.paddling.net/buyersguide/...oattype=Kayaks 2. Spearfishing and inflatable kayaks do not go well fish spines and spear tips can poke a hole in them. I think they are just cheep kids toys and are of little use to a serious spearfishing person.

Re: What Inflatable Kayak should be for Ocean?
I've never tried it, but some of the whitewater inflatable kayaks look pretty robust. Talking to the whitewater folks in my area, they call them IK's or "Rubber Ducky's". They have a reputation for being durable and easy to paddle in rough water.
Both Aire and Lynx have good reputations around here, but looking at those links, they sure are expensive. You could get a heck of a hard kayak for less money. Of course, the hard yak won't fit in a trunk... Ron. |

Re: What Inflatable Kayak should be for Ocean?
I have a 15' kaboat. Originally i had been sold on the whole 'paddle or engine' aspect but figured out pretty quick that it really sucks to paddle it. Better than a big zodiac but not like a hard kayak..
That being said it is pretty cool with a light engine and i am out all the time in anything else you would take a small craft out in... made some other modifications but you defjnitely need to spend $25 on a vinyl floor runner and cut it to fit on top of the air floor, or fish and bugs that you chuck into it will inevitably make pin holes in the air floor.

Have you checked out SeaEagle inflatables? I have one of their inflatable boats and love it. They're very durable and great quality.

I have a "thrillkat" an inflatable white water "catacraft". Comes in 11ft @ 14ft
I have 11ft. Very durable, taken it to Hawaii. Lots of windage! I also have an inflatable SUP. Samoa. I installed D-rings and attach a SOT kayak seat. Can paddle as either SUP or SOT. Much less windage. There are newer better white water SuP's. Have you considered an SUP? |
