Modified rail gun muzzles

We have had so much information and talk about upgrading tripper mechanisms and handles, carbon barrels, spear size, etc. All of it has been super educational for me and in practice has helped me fine tune my guns and better understand the nuts and bolts of an accurate speargun. Thanks so much. I feel like the next step would be modifying muzzles to personal taste. I have seen a few people have done. I would like to raise the bands on my pathos railgun to be more in line with the shaft. I saw a guy on youtube with a pathos open muzzle that had been filled in with epoxy just leaving a hole or tube for some spectra and then had individual single bands tied to it. That idea seems interesting, especially if it could be adapted to two bands. Or making a muzzle that had band elevators built into it. Meandros makes something of this nature but $90 for a muzzle seems way to high. Anyway any good ideas out there?

If you search around then you will see stacks of muzzles that try to align the bands with the spear shaft axis and keep the band run off the gun’s top deck, but the extant muzzles tend to be what is easy to produce and makes band changeover quick rather than wrestling bands out of a band alignment directing muzzle, e.g. biplane wing type muzzles and socket anchoring band systems working from vertical muzzle plates or horizontal side bars. This one even resembled a Dinosaur (once the bands were removed)!

Re: Modified rail gun muzzles

Thanks for posting that pic! Thats one crazy muzzle. I bet that was a bear to swing through the water. I have seen plenty of muzzles trying to accomplish the task, but most seem to add so much extra bulk. The one that seems most interest is the Meandros head X4 open, but it so stupid expensive. I was thinking it shouldnt be to hard to create someting that accomplishes the same task, or something similar, out of muzzle I already have. Or even creating a muzzle with a band attachment point similar to the newer C4 guns. It would be as low profile as possible but still bring the bands up inline at least somwhat better.

Re: Modified rail gun muzzles

I am going to try tinkering with one but I do not have much for fabrication skills. If I accomplish anything interesting I will post it.

To help Makoa out I am commenting on this thread again. Didn't get much traction the first time.

Check out the muzzles here, some are rip-offs and some may be "home-grown". http://www.speargun.com.au

Re: Modified rail gun muzzles

I would love to have a pipe gun muzzle like the muzzle on a C4 mr dark. That idea seems simple and should work so well. I think

Re: Modified rail gun muzzles

Pete what I don't understand is why they always use the metal portion to push the rubber on and tie it to. Why don't more muzzels just give a tie point and you attach the band to a knot? Would be lighter and in some ways simpler.

I assume that if anything breaks they want the wishbone end to fly forwards to the muzzle. If the muzzle breaks the rubbers come flying back to maybe smash you in the face as then the band anchor is effectively the shaft tab or notch.

I have heard of situations where corroded screw-in muzzles have snapped and shot the ferrules into the operator's face, he being the gun's new target. Always pays to periodically check your muzzles for cracks.

An advantage of inverted rollers is the band battery crashes into the muzzle or underneath the gun deck if things go badly wrong.

Also refer to post #13 added below.

good call Andrew!
will contribute with this pipegun band-raiser muzzle am currently carving out of Vitex, undoubtedly inspired by Majd’s Nubian Labia muzzle posted on Makoa’s carbon barrel thread.

Re: Modified rail gun muzzles

My humble mods:
A Pathos muzzle with a bit of putty to not have double 14mm bands slide around too much. And hey, I gained 1cm of stretch, haha:

I also modded a Cressi muzzle, again to grip 14mm bands tighter and also close to front slot, so the band wont accidentally fall out.
Before:

After:

And as it was being worked on:

Re: Modified rail gun muzzles

There are muzzles that have a set of metal wings drilled with holes on either side of the muzzle to accommodate lots of bands. The bands are tied with cords at the front anchors like a normal wishbone at the rear, the disadvantage is the bands flail around after the shot and they have to be set up for side to side band pull equivalence. Bill Kitto offered these with some of his Delrin enclosed track monsters as a way of getting the many bands anchored on the gun. There is an oblique reference to this type of muzzle in my standard gun comparison diagrams.

Modified rail gun muzzles

Marco posted this muzzle in another thread. I bought this one, too but in the end used the other modified Cressi posted above. I was worried it would be too easy to loose 14mm bands on this muzzle with its large gaps. I think it’s from a time when Euro brands where pushing for thicker and thicker bands. I might be seeing issues where there are none, though (and the gun I was building was for 13-14mm bands):

Re: Modified rail gun muzzles

The great-granddaddy of this idea is Yves Le Prieur's 8 band cannon that was saddled with loop rubber strips. No band rubber back in 1938.
