Advice for a one armed scuba diver

So a close friend of mine crashed his motorcycle and his right arm is paralyzed. Its 7 months and he wants to get in the water again.

Anyone know any one arm scuba guys out there?

Del Wren was a one legged diver.

For sure, it can be done. I wish him luck!!! Help him simplify his gear, that will be paramount. You have scored; he's gonna need someone to help load his speargun for a while, or help bag his lobster. I believe that means he has to chip in half for your share of the fuel!!!

Re: Advice for a one armed scuba diver

Swimming with no arm (amputee) is easier than with a paralyzed arm. Is he right or left handed? Is the arm completely flaccid/limp? Is there movement on the shoulder or elbow region? I'm sure he can be able to dive but he will need to secure the paralyzed arm to his chest or stomach or waist so it won't be flailing around and getting in the way. Pneumatic gun is the way to go unless he can do one arm pull ups. There is a one arm surfer, one arm boxer and one arm MMA fighter (all amputees). Lots of amputee scuba divers. I don't know of a one arm freediver yet.

The modification on what will work and what will not work will come from him and its going to be a trial and error process.

The best bet is to get advice from a hemiplegic (stroke) that still scuba dive (rare and unheard off).

PM me if he wants to talk. I used to work with the wounded warriors.

Re: Advice for a one armed scuba diver

I know Daryl Wong made a modified speargun for a one-armed diver, and it worked well for him. You might want to call him and ask what he did. Even if you don't get a Wong speargun, I'm sure he'd be happy to share his advice.

I know nothing about pneumatics or how they work/the loading process. But maybe that would be a good option instead of loading bands.

Re: Advice for a one armed scuba diver

you could ad forward wings to a gun that you put your feet on to, (think pogo stick) and use a cord w/ handle to draw the bands.... Bottom line I think is that if he really wants it, it could happen..... My friend Ron has learned to out swim, out hunt all the rest of us with only 1 leg .. Hope to see him out there.

Re: Advice for a one armed scuba diver

Thanks everyone. He is right handed and his right arm is completely limp from the deltoids down.

Right now we're just figuring out how to get him in the water and in a westuit with some sense of comfort.

I was thinking about the pogostick speargun idea down the line. Wwe're also trying to rig him up to hook and line big fish as that is his main passion.

Gonna get him out there in a week or so.

Might be an option for fishing.
