Bring a big pipe gun if you have it. I'd recommend something from 100-130cm. The fish are all small and smart on the reefs there. You don't need a license like CA, but grab a book of fishing regs from a fishing store when you get there. They are pretty simple, compared to CA, but still important to know.
I was actually welcomed very kindly by all the local spearos I met, some local divers took me out and showed me some great spots on Maui. I would try to hook up with some local guys. There doesn't seem to be much animosity towards outsiders like you get with surfing, at least in my experiences.
yo kevin,
I am heading to maui and kuia soon. Hoping to do some spearing. mostly beach dives just to get a few fish for campfire dinners. what do you recommend as far as gear and spots to target? I don't want to break any laws or piss any one off. It seems like theres a lot of hostility towards people going out and spearing so I want to avoid that. hope your doing well.
