I also bet it was a Black Drum, they look like this. The top of the fish had a pinkish or golden glow from the surface light hitting it.

The underwater visibility changes throughout the day, it may be 3-4 feet when you begin diving, then it may improve to 5-6 feet. You do have a comfort zone by staying close to the rocks.
