Vale Dr. Carl Edmonds, Diving Medicine Expert
Dr. Carl Edmonds has passed on at 83 years of age. He has a string of letters attached to his name which bears witness to his many achievements. A medical doctor and Navy man he has been a driving force in the understanding of the factors involved in diving deaths and trauma and the effects of being underwater on human physiology. An author of many books on the subject and contributor to scholarly journals and conference papers on diving he has left an indelible mark on the world of diving.
https://www.divelog.net.au/ Dive-Log-inc-Sportdiving-Magazine-377-Dec/80/ Many years ago I attended an “Oceans Congress” where Dr Carl Edmonds (then a Navy Doctor) gave a lecture on the reality of shark attack. It was at the time when the Taylors were first saying sharks were misunderstood and not the monsters of historic reputation. A slide show of morgue photos (victims faces were obscured by blacked out rectangles) accompanied the lecture and showed some ghastly images of the remains recovered from the scenes of fatal shark attacks. Dr Edmonds said that people might need to reassess the friendly, curious and harmless view of sharks being currently promoted as just a publicity device and that the reality was that sharks were extremely dangerous animals that saw humans as just another source of food. Unfortunately that rare moment of complete candour has not been replicated and the sharks are good, but misunderstood creatures mentality has gone on from strength to strength. Dr Carl also gave conference lectures to the diving public where topics such as bone necrosis and inner ear damage were discussed which tended to concentrate the mind on issues which many in the audience (myself included) had previously pigeon-holed as "not applicable to me". He issued many a wake-up call to those who had descended into bad habits, often literally! He will be greatly missed, you only get one like him once in a generation, if that. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and associates. |
