Float Line

For those of you using float line, what length are you using here in the NW? I was thinking of getting that foam filled line off neptonics, but don't know what length would be appropriate.

Thanks!

Re: Float Line

How deep are you diving? How much current is there? I tend to stick to a 75' with a kelp carrot. I hate reels when there is kelp. Up here the fishing doesn't really start until 50', so a 75' line isn't out of place at all.

Re: Float Line

I made a 50' with parts from Neptonics and saved a few bucks. It works great and took me about an hour to put together.

Re: Float Line

If you do build your own I like my tuna clip with a swivel on one end and a speed stringer on the other.

Re: Float Line

How easy is to to run the cord through the vinyl tubing? Any tricks that will save me a bunch of cursing?

What color should I go with?

Re: Float Line

I have a 75' and should have done a 50'. Bought mine from sturgill with the cord running through it. It has saved me from buying a new gun a few times.

Re: Float Line

Use dental floss and a vacuum.

White is nice because it doesn't suffer all that much from the loss of color underwater, and a ball of it on the surface is pretty easily visible from a boat(in addition to your float)

The kit I posted above comes with the core pre-threaded. You just have to do the eye splices on the hardware as shown here:

Re: Float Line

Oh, well that will be even easier than I was thinking. Some more questions:

-How do I rig the gun to the float line? I notice that there is break away rigs, but is that what you guys are doing? Or does the gun stay attached to everything?
-Hmm, since I know nothing about this (never done any spearfishing), wondering what I all need to run the float line set up?

Thank you for the help!

Your gun should have something on the handle where you can attach the floatline's end clip - or you may need to rig a loop with ~200# mono and crimps through a hole in the handle. I don't personally like the tuna clip on my gun's handle - too bulky - I use the smaller shark clip. I use the tuna clip for the float at the surface. Everything stays connected. You shoot a fish; if you can't grab it on your breath hold, drop your gun, go up and then retrieve it all when you're ready.

Breakaways are for BIG game hunting like Tuna, Marlin, etc... where if the fish isn't stoned, its gonna run like a raging bull.

A couple extras; whenever possible, have a dive flag on your float. If you go to Hawaii, its lawfully required. If you are diving in thick kelp beds (boats won't be coming through this), generally disconnect your float and just pull the floatline.

Hope that helps!

Float Line

This is how I have my clip attached to my gun. There is a very nice Australian lady that will show you how to tie that knot on YouTube.
