Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Ya the shark hit Ryan's boat 2 times, all 3 guys he was with were within 5 feet when the shark hit. So apparently strength in numbers is out the window lol. Dfg estimated the shark to be 19 to 22ft by measuring the bite marks. And apparently another one of the guys got hit 2 weeks ago up in big sur. Glad there ok....

And Ya that was his hobie and the hole is for the peddles, we have talked about that on cckf, but two guys got hit last year on standard sot yaks. Another theory is you ff attracts them.

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Not sure if anyone wants to swim around like a seal in light of recent events, but I surfed c st yesterday and it was the clearest I have ever seen it (normally I can't see anything while surfing there), being able to see the reef and kelp stocks underneath my board. Everywhere from Carpenteria to Ventura looked blue and beautiful, maybe its time to head south!

Quit giving away the secret harbor spots! I found 10-ish ft vis today in town. It's definitly diveable, and worth getting out before any of the SE hurricane energy shows up.

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

I got in up north today and found patchy vis ranging from 5-20', the good conditions being in shallow and outside. Water was 69 and very surgy; some good surfable sets came through.

Bugs were there but few in numbers, and the only legals I saw were the few in the traps. I wasted a lot of the dive looking for a legal bug, but everytime I got one out and gauged it it was just under legal. Lots of bait schooling through the kelp had me looking for a game fish, but all I came up with was a couple of fat calicos that I couldnt close the deal with

Errin that pic of your "marina score" is killing me, Im hoping you went south for that fat haul. Uggh Im 2 dives into bug season and I have 2 zeroes.

I came home with a bunch of fossils, few good sized rockfish, and my divebud Pinay, shot a stringer of reffies and her first pelagic; a nice topsmelt.

Finished up the beach day with a cold brtew and a PB&J on the beach. It was hot as F#@% on the beach and the hike up with the gear fish and fossils was a slog.

Up top by our vehicle was a bubbler who was sporting a 7mil he had got into by the highway and was going to hike down in with all his bubble gear and shit. That guy if he didnt die of heatstroke has some 10 grit determination.

Dove Sunday afternoon with great conditions in town, top to bottom most spots. Lots of fish, was hunting for lobster and found a good amount (that I couldn't grab, gotta work on my skills!)

Dove Monday at the same spot around the same time and it was shit soup, worse at the bottom.

Dove some structure way east of Goleta last night. Vis was 5-15. Some surge still in the shallower zones. Temp was 72.

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

I did find a porcupine fish last night. I didn't realize how rare that was in our waters until my dive buddy shed some light on the subject.

Yep, their published range is Peru to San Diego. So. Cal. is having such an oddball year. I just wish I was right there to get it on film.
