Thumbs down Spearing Jew Fish...Again

Someone shot a Jew Fish on Tunnels in Jupiter and it's making quite a bit of noise on Facebook. The story will run on WPTV Channel 5 at 6:00 tonight. Great publicity for spearfishing

Thanks for giving our sport another black eye you POS!

The owner of Jupiter Dive Center was able to remove the spear and the fish is still alive. Great job Gerry

If you want your Rob Allen shaft back, please go see them.

@Freemanfish -- It is a circle hook and some heavy mono in its mouth... not a bug.

Re: Spearing Jew Fish...Again

Just saw the news story. While the reality is that these things are so abundant that I couldn't care less if one gets shot, its definitely not good publicity for the community, and I'm sure it will result in more drama we don't need.

Re: Spearing Jew Fish...Again

I feel bad for the Goliath.....but they really need to have a limited harvest to reduce the heard.

Re: Spearing Jew Fish...Again

It is true that what this person did was wrong and makes us spear fishermen look bad, but the honestly I think itís time to open a season on these guys. Maybe just a mini season and hook and line gear only. Just harvest the smaller ones, let the big breeders walk.

These pictures show that people aren't ready and if a harvest is opened more of these photos will appear. Then what do you think is going to happen to our sport?

Unhappy Re: Spearing Jew Fish...Again

Their primary diet around here is Shameface Crabs and certainly NOT lobster, grouper, snapper or other such prey. They are here in Jupiter in far greater numbers due to the annual summer spawning aggregation between the months of July, August, and September. The scientists working with Captain Mike Newman recently detected one that had come all the way from Jacksonville to Jupiter in two weeks. That is a long way for a bulky GG to cover swimming against the current in some parts I imagine.

They are apex predators who are opportunistic feeders who have been incorrectly cast by many as a negative force on reefs and wrecks. The scientific facts are beginning to show otherwise. They were almost wiped out into extinction and have been on a steady road to recovery.

The spearfisher man or woman who did this really should learn more about them before considering doing something like that again. This behavior is definitely not representative of the 99.9% of the spearfishing community who respect the law.

Re: Spearing Jew Fish...Again

Would have to agree that it was a good deed removing the shaft and all....but not such a friendly deed to spearfishermen publicising the fact he did it. IMHO outside opinion, it could be construded as selfish in order to promote his business....just saying

Woody, we both know how fertile the Internet can be for posting speculation. Knowing Gerry, the owner of JDC, fairly well, I sincerely doubt that self-promotion is his agenda. Andrew is the Original poster here and recently posted about Goliath Groupers in another situation. Free speech is a gnarly thing sometimes and opinions abound on Spearboard about this subject - just run a search on Goliaths or jewfish and see what pops up.

Wow, that's insane. I can't believe that, 1.) That fish is alive. And 2.) The guy got the shaft out without causing more damage.

I am a strong believer in the need for jewfish tags, even if for hook and line only.
