Re: 1ST Cubera
Here's the story on the Cubera, had to share it. It was the last dive of our three day trip. We had just motored in from the middle grounds and decided to hit a series of our favorite spots on the way back in. Rolled over the side got swarmed by 60-100 lb jacks at about 60', then came the ARS, then somehow a black snapper got mixed up with the ARS so of course I had to shoot him, stoned him at 90' 9 lbs. Hit the bottom and a BIG gag started swimming away from me and my buddy, we followed for a minute until something caught my eye, a huge black snapper, lined up, pulled the trigger and smack, hit him low, powerhead did not go off, went straight through him, and off he swims, not fast but too fast for me to catch. I see him swim over a ledge and he's gone. While I'm trying to catch him I see a cave, being a former cave diver I go in to investigate, low and behold there is this Cubera looking at me like he wants to eat me. I line up and squeeze the trigger, smack him right in the noggin, he doesn't move for a split second, but then he does. He tears out of the cave silted the entire thing, swims 100 yards turns around and goes right back in the hole that he just came out of. I go up to about 110' to get a clear head and come up with a game plan. I stay there for about 2 minutes waiting for the silt to clear, go back down, still silted up, go back up to 110', go back down, still silted. On my way back up to 110' I see my buddy from earlier, I begin screaming at him through my reg to come here. As he is swimming over I notice he know has a spare shaft with a powerhead on it that looks exactly like the one that the black snapper had hanging put of it. I pull the powerhead off the shaft and place it on mine, we both go in cave now, silt is slightly cleared up, I shine my light to my right and there sits the cubera 3' away from me. I put the trusty battleaxe perpendicular to my body and squeeze the trigger, game over! BTW powerheads detonated in enclosed quarters are extremely loud! I have this on video and I am working on editing it, once done I will post it.
