1.4m Deep Reef, trying something new.
I am making a good friend another gun for his New Zealand trip. He liked my Deep Reef gun and wanted one the same. I was keen to try something a little different (for me anyway).
Here is the start of it. |

Re: 1.4m Deep Reef, trying something new.
The gun is only 64 inches from tip to tail.
1.4m is from the back of the band slot to the sear. I am only 5'10" and will load my 1.7m with no issues. He is 6'2 or 6'3" and built like a Neanderthal. He will be targeting Yellowtail Kingfish and snapper with it. Not sure if he will get a chance to make it to the tuna grounds this trip. |

Re: 1.4m Deep Reef, trying something new.
Nice looking weapon, will be plenty of gun for our kingfish.
He may want to pack a 1.1 or 1.2 for the snapper as quite often shots are close and the fish is parked up close to the rocks which can be pretty tough on the spear tip.. If he gets up to the Bay of Islands tell him to get in touch as we are spearing every weekend and sometimes through the week so can get him out for a dive if he wants. |

Re: 1.4m Deep Reef, trying something new.
Cheers Doggie. I was at the Bay of Islands earlier this year, right when the cyclone hit
I had a little 8.5 hour dive off the lighthouse near Russell. Got to hand feed snapper and kingfish. Took some lovely green mussels and 2 x 5kg snapper. Had dives booked in Craig from Paihia Dive but they were cancelled. (He is a champion bloke) I need to get back there to find the +40kg King and I desperately want to see the Orcas. He will be taking this gun and a 1.2 Free Divers. Cheers. |

Very nice! Did you use a sleeve or just normal cloth? Finish looks really great!

This had just come out of the bag. It needs 4 - 6 coats to get a good finish. It has had 2 layers of carbon and one of a hybrid carbon / glass over the top.

Great piece Darren!
Have you routed the band grooves - super nice shape with the fade out. |
