PB SeaBass
The Sun hadn't yet cleared the horizon when I rolled over the side and made my way down to 168' with no current and good vis - if a little dark without much help from the Sun yet. I glided down the anchor rope and pushed forward of the hook in search of Scamp, Gags, & Hogs. The bottom was fit for a smorgasbord, but no one was at the buffet. Rocks the size of engine blocks stood alone in the sand near the ledge built of SUV-sized rock piles with an occasional stand-alone fiat. I spent a few minutes hunting and decided to head back to the hook. I almost called it and began an ascent, but decided - with the vis opening up - I would work back toward the boat looking over my shoulder every few breaths and keep the anchor rope above me and in sight. 11 minutes into my dive and FINALLY a shooter (5#Mango). My times up and I hate handing Hot-N-Fresh Krispy Kreme Stringers up to the boat; I pursue him to save face. He's your usual spastic young snapper and leads me down the piece a bit. He makes his way under a table-top rock right as I'm drawing the bead. His head enters the shadow and immediately he turns 90 degrees and grabs a gear. "There must be a monster in There." Muzzle's already pointed under the ledge. I flick on my light and - confirmation. Squeeze one off and give Black Betty the Unicorn Treatment with my 10" Stainless Paralyzer. Next instant Wile E. Coyote and Roadrunner tear down the ledge kicking up a 10' tall silt cloud. I load my second shaft and find the ledged-up bass not far away. He's not having it and moves to his original cave as I get to see the entire fish for the first time - Beautiful, lit up Black and white vertical bars with the red dots down low; my shaft dragging behind (bent tip 180 degrees). I land another shot right behind the eye from the top on the holed-up Black and attempt the relocate the animal topside. Not ready yet and my time was up a while ago. So, I give the shafts a good shoving, place my donut of a stringer directly on top of the rock he's under, and ascend to begin my 20 minutes + deco. Captian Tony doesn't know what to think when I hand him an empty gun, smile, and give him the thumbs up. He drops in, lands a 20# Hog, THEN decides to address the Sea Bass. Black Betty runs down the ledge after two additional well placed shots (4 in tow at this point), and finally gets introduced to the stringer after a little early morning cardio.
Official Gutted Weight of 93 lbs!

Re: PB SeaBass
For Jacks, Cobia, & 100# Cubera inside wrecks - all day. Free shaft paralyzers for all else.
Thanks everyone for te congrats. It was my last trip (for the foreseeable future) off Carolina. So, I was really pleased to take part in landing such a big magnificent fish. Tony ran a great program, taught me tons as a spearo and pushed me as a diver. What a great experience and this fish was the only way to complete my summer hunting the Carolina Coast
