I have a friend who lived on 17 Mile Drive. At times we returned late in the night. There was a security/toll guard assigned at all hours.

Here's my take (I live in the area)-

There's always someone there. A few years ago I used to drive through the resident gate and just wave at the guard, they didn't do anything.

A few months ago I went with a friend who's family owns a house within the gated community but doesn't live in it, he just waved as he drove by and a minute later a security truck was pulling us over; had to verify they owned a property and it was pain in the ass.

If you have a nice car, you may be able to get away with just waving as you go through.

Also, the badges that the residents have are available for purchase, around 200-300 dollars for the year. I'm surprised the Tritons don't have a club badge yet.

#1 Haha so funny..and maybe (but sadly) true. "Jeeves! Ready the Bentley...And throw my wetsuit in it too-the camo one!"

#2You can bet I'd be putting the rush on my mental note to join the Tritons if they did That's all they'd have to do if they really wanted to increase membership haha..

Re: 17 mile drive, Carmel: What time do they man the toll booths!?

Years ago when I was diving Carmel alot (90's), we used to go in thru the Highway 1 gate on our way to Stillwater to launch the kayaks. Early weekend mornings didn't see heavy gate traffic, so we had a chance to get to know some of the guards. Turns out everyone we got to know liked fish...So we had a symbiotic arrangement that worked great. We get in free and share our catch on the way out. It was never a big deal to shoot a couple blues or olives to share. Always kept the caps and lings though

If you're comfortable starting a conversation in a very short time window, I would speculate that it might still work if there are not lines of cars in back of you.

Oh, yeah..ya gotta love stuff like that-symbiotic relationships where everybody benefits. Wish everything could be that way. I wonder if any of the guards who were working then are still working now. Well, talking doesn't cost anything, right? Mahalo nui loa.

1. Wear a Titleist baseball hat
2. If there is someone else in the car, fake an animated conversation as you are drivingrough
3. As you pass the gate, look over at the security guy and give the confident wave.
4. Slow down, but do not stop

There used to be a guy that would let you in if you said you were spearfishing, but I think they have cracked down.

Some gates are easier than others.

You can also say you are visiting a friend. They will check the list which you will not be on. However, they may just ask what street your friend lives on and let you in anyway.

Just go in a truck that looks as though it could only be there to do work.

We have a member who lives on the water in StillWater Cove. We don't need no stinkin badges.

Give them the finger as you drive by, works 100% of the time every time.

Yeah, works every time...........to get the "Goonie Squad" chasing you, with guns drawn.

Re: 17 mile drive, Carmel: What time do they man the toll booths!?

We've found that just giving them a confident wave gets the job done. They'll often look a little confused, but I don't think it's really worth their hassle to chase you down or send the goons after you.

Another possible trick is next time you're there, take the time to find an address where they've got the name on the mailbox, then stop at the gate and say that you're going to see so-and-so at 1234 Whatever St. Only catch would be if they say "You're not on the list. Why don't I give so-and-so a call..."

Re: 17 mile drive, Carmel: What time do they man the toll booths!?

Wow, got a lot more interesting, and varied responses than I thought. Good read after I got back today.

P.S. If anyone cares about a report, I dove the outside and the swell was just enough that I'd think a little harder about doing it tomorrow when it's supposed to get a little worse. Viz was about 10-15 ft. depending on where you were, with it getting worse farther out, just like it has been for the last few weeks. Plenty of blues and a few nice Olives. No Lings or Cabs this time unfortunately . Did spot a couple blues looked like they had survived some recent and major Ling carnage, but I never found the culprit..

I've always wondered how the residents of carmel get away with controlling access to the ocean like this via a toll (I don't care of Dirty Harry lives there

The warm shower more than makes up for any other inconveniences, IMHO.
