Carbon fiber gun build FINISHED
Well few months and a few attemps later, I finished my gun. It came out better than I could have hoped for! I started with a 4x4 of balsa with a mohogany stringer, used a jig to cut a funky shape, then used a spoke shave and sand paper to get the shape. I then made a muzzle out of delrin and pinned it to the front. I used three wraps uni carbon, followed by a carbon fiber sleeve, sanded smooth, another sleeve, 3 heavy wet coats of phil's epoxy (evened out the surface, polished later to 2000 grit) . I used shrink wrap from soller composites to pseudo-vacuume bag it. I attached my handle assembly ( fiberglass T shaped handle, balsa sides, carbon covered). re-wrapped the rear in carbon, set trigger gaurd ( custom carbon). Set trigger in Neptonics rear, with neptonics shaft, both polished.
And its done, granted I did each one of these steps twice with lotsa sanding and remaking because I kept skrewing up! Thank you all for your input! http://www.spearboard.com/attachment...1&d=1366724449 |

Well done, a lot of thought went into that muzzle and the rest of the build. Could you post a close up of the handle, I am curious to see how you integrated the all carbon handle. I would love to see that gun in person.

Re: Carbon fiber gun build ideas
Thanks guys, i am very happy with the gun aside from a few epoxy bubbles and cosmetic issues i have just decided to live with. I wish I could show you how i did the handle, but its mostly internally attached. I made it seperately with fiberglass, like the aluminum "skeleton" handle you can get from neptronics, then glued balsa sides on and carved it to my hand shape. I wrapped it in a carbon sleeve and skrewed and epoxied it to the gun, then put my final carbon sleeve on the gun wrapping it around the handles base, useing electrical tape to wrap it tight. Once sanded out and epoxied the seam disappears. Its solid, but light.
I hope to get it wet sometime next week, think it is ballasted ok, but we will see! |

Re: Carbon fiber gun build ideas
Well done on the build. Especially without a vacuum setup. Vaccing tends to give a really clear carbon look because there are no bubbles. I am intrigued by the sleeve, my supplier has it but never used it myself.

Re: Carbon fiber gun build ideas
I thought about buying a vaccuum.... but not for one project, i used seran wrap and electrical tape wich squeezed the bubbles and extra resin out keeping it tight, just had to sand the ridges off and use an extra layer of "finish" sleeve. I highly recomend the woven sleeves, there a dream to work with, conforming to every curve and keeping an almost strait pattern. Soller composites online had them in all different styles shapes, materials, and at good prices, fast shipping too.

Re: Carbon fiber gun build ideas
What did you do for the Trigger Pocket, Pins, and Line Release? Just Epoxy or did you use some composites to Watertight them?

Re: Carbon fiber gun build ideas
I just did epoxy, but there are 3 layers of carbon uni that run along the inside of the gun along the trigger pocket , if i did it again i would make a carbon trigger pocket, set it in and use carbon sleeve in holes for the pins, then drill out for the pins... i went with a top line release to avoid the issues with it!
