Abellan Albacore for the reef??
I was watching some Mediterranean Sea videos. Some spearos were using 130cm bleutec king cobras with 3 bands and a 7.5/8mm shaft for reef fishing.
I was wondering if anyones ever pondered the idea of strapping a reel on one andusing an Albacore for some reef action. I think it would be a truly unbeatable reef gun powered down to just 2 bands with either a 7.5 or 8mm shaft. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: Abellan Albacore for the reef??
I guess the gun (length, shaft, bands, reel) must fit the environment and target species.
Whenever you see people in the Mediterranean Sea with such high powered guns is because are either looking for BIG fish (tuna, wherever is allowed or amberjacks), or are looking for smaller sized fish that don't get too close and require long accurate shots (such as Dentex Dentex). On the other hand, there is people using single band guns to shoot big groupers in the Gibraltar Stretch (big fish, but usually hole hunted). What do you plan on shooting? Are they shy? Is the water clear? Mikel |

If you look at the ‘Orca Fusiles’ spearguns that is exactly what they offer with their Kosmos model. I have shot most of the top brand guns from my buddies but these Orca spearguns really stand out in quality and performance. Just got one for myself and thoroughly impressed. Not trying to advertise them but they deserve some attention if you are looking for an Abellan type of gun. If you want to go the wooden speargun route consider the Denton 110. That gun performs very well but can use some upgrades like the trigger and handle that come standard with the Orca’s. I personally have not really encountered a situation on a deep reef where I needed anything bigger than a 110. But as mentioned above what is your hunting ground look like and what species are you after? |

I think for Med you are better off with something like a customized tube gun @ 120 or 130 with a 7mm or 7.5mm shaft and 2 x hot small ID bands. Usually dives are very deep and you want something that is easy to swim up and down with. I have a friend of mine in Malta who I helped do that and he put quite an effort to do an effective mod. He has sent me some pretty incredible video of him nailing grouper and dentex at extreme ranges. An Albacore 130 weighs around 3.5 kilos while a customized tube gun is around 700 grams. So a lot less effort required for repeated deep dives ... while still maintaining good performance. Of course with such a light gun you really have to do a good handle mod and your band to shaft setup needs to be perfect with a very good crisp reliable trigger. But then you have good performance all the way to 7m for med fish. |
