Im just south of St Augustine and wind and rain has been screaming all night. Another 24 hours to go. Gonna walk over to the beach this morning and see what the waves look like.

Heartbreaking scenes. I have spent some time on the Caribbean islands, and it is obvious why they build their homes out of only reinforced concrete and steel. They are the only thing that can hold up to hurricanes.

Re: Hurrican Ian

I feel lucky. It could've been so much worse.

Re: Hurrican Ian

Sailing buddy sent me a text to start looking at the insurance auctions for boats.I guess if it was a boat I had the hots for I might jump but sweating in a boat yard working on boats kills the love affair real quick.
Im hoping after this storm people wake up about how bad even a low surge storm can go bad real quick.

I have built lots of block homes and warehouses and always stressed adding concrete even when not required by code.I have seen homes with 2x4s blown through block walls.
Me and my oldest son have done ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms)blocks. They are simple and once the concrete is set in the forms with the rebar and mesh it would take a tank to put a hole in one.The panhandle has several homes that after bad storms only had minor plaster damage.
For a first time home builder they are really easy to do and you can choose the concrete thickness from 4-8 inches with 2 inches foam insulation on each side.Super strong and energy efficient.

I'll wager they're fine. We had just about nothing here in the Pasco/Hernando area.
