Re: Don't Understand???
Y'all give this guy a break--it's hard to manage grammar, syntax, content, and spelling when you're peddling like mad to turn the generator to run your lap top.

Re: Don't Understand???
Damn those first world problems... I'm pissed off that I don't have a heated toilet seat atm. This guy can't find fish because tank divers slayed them all, now his island is starving. Woe is me with over regulated fisheries.

Re: Don't Understand???
Bunch of pu$$ys freediving with masks, fins, snorkels and even WET SUITS.
Real men dive NAKED and don't use guns and poles, but grab fish with their HANDS and pith them with their TEETH. And real men breathe up while drinking cheap TEQUILA. Those of you who actually GET FISH are raping the ocean.

Re: Don't Understand???
It is interesting how many of these Caribbean countires that have banned the use of scuba for spearfishing still allow something as non-selective and wasteful as wire fish traps to be used.
Maybe, this guy should concentrate on cleaning up his own back yard before he attempts to clean the back yard of others -- who have already done a good job of cleaning theirs. |

Re: Don't Understand???
Wire fish traps you can let the fish go....
Probably better we just stop eating fish all together. Lost of people shouldnt be eating them as they are not natural to the areas some people live in. Ie people in non coastal areas should not eat saltwater fish....they arent natural to those people. If they live near a fresh water source let them eat beaver and catfish. Only people who live near source of food should eat that type. Rest of people eat what cha got. That principle would stop the overkill of our oceans real fast. Then we wouldnt need tank spearos |

Re: Don't Understand???
Not if you can't find them after a boat cuts the buoy rope or a storm redistributes them to deeper water where the buoy is now underwater. Fish traps are horrible.
I can't believe he came on here bitching about scuba diver's whilst having fish traps in his area. The ignorance is strong in this one.

And spearfishing with scuba allows you to select the fish you want--avoid undersized or specis off limits -- there is no bycatch -- so what is your point? |

Re: Don't Understand???
I think some folks just plain don't want to complete with others utilizing different methods of harvest other than their own. Get rid of tank divers.... more fish for skindivers to hunt. There is the perception that tank divers shoot more fish because it is easier. Well yes, it is easier as scuba allows a diver more access to areas skindivers simply cannot hunt either because of depth, visability or both. That said in a well managed fishery the method of harvest doesn't really matter... your limit of grouper or snapper is your limit. How it gets in the cooler really shouldn't matter.
To me spearfishing is something I enjoy but is not a sport but a method of harvesting fish. I enjoy scuba, skin and hook and line and don't begrudge any other user group out there that follows the rules and harvests responsively. I know many accomplished skindiver, scuba and H&L fishermen and all of them respect each other and their chosen method of harvest. Crying foul by the mediocre is nothing new.... if you suck at fishing it always seems to be somebody elses fault.

Re: Don't Understand???
kmoose:
Yes, a dead fish is a dead fish and it should not matter how it is taken as long as it is within legal limits and quotas are not exceeded. However, if there is an unacceptable level of bycatch, lost gear and habitat damage associated with the harvest--then it does matter--and that is the problem I have with fish traps. Spearfishing, freediving or with tanks, has none of these problems. |
