Looking to learn to spearfish! Santa Barbara

Hello everyone! Our names are Krystal and Brenndan and we are very interested in learning to spearfish, so we were curious if there was anyone that we could tag along with and learn all aspects of spearfishing from safety to techniques so that we do this right, rather than going out and having no clue what we're doing. If anyone would like to be our spearfishing Yoda, please let us know! We are in Santa Barbara. Thank you!!!

Brennedy, I believe you have a great club in your area. You may want to attend a Santa Barbara Freediver meeting and meet some of your local spearos. You would also get a better response if you detailed any dive experience that you may have, such as "are you scuba certified " etc. Good luck

Hey Bob! Thank you so much for the advice! Currently I (Krystal) have zero experience with free diving, which is what we'd like to do. Brenndan is a lifeguard, so he has swim experience, but no free diving experience either. We actually do plan on going to the March 2nd meeting with SB Free Dive club.

First thing you guys need to get good at is snorkling...learn to clear ur mask from water and fog ...and learn how to adjust your mask and snorkle while in the water. Get comfortable with this and freediving will come in naturally. Get as many snorkling sessions in shallow reefs, swim beach or even in a swimming pool. Start performing multiple short 5 ft dives and mask/snorkle clearing..when you finally feel like there is no need to panic when water is splashing in your face..then you are ready for freediving.

Watch about 250,000 youtube videos. Show up to the water planning to crush a white sea bass. Shoot a 4 inch perch and haul it in like a boss. That's what I did. Been having a great time ever since.

Hahahaha well I'm not up to that many YouTube videos yet, but I watch them every single day now . That's an awesome mentality, thank you! My mom loves perch, so it would still be a win

The SB Freediver Club is a great place to meet folks and learn from some of the veterans of our sport.

They meet the first wed of the month, at 730 at Rustys on Carrillo St. They are a great group and very helpful!

Jokes aside though, if you show up looking to have a really great time, even if it's not what you expected you'll still leave feeling great.

The OP seems to have a great attitude and should have no problem having a good time and making friends.

Nothing better about this sport to me than getting out with buddies, getting a laugh out of fishing misfortunes, and getting fired up on each other's success.
