Re: Loading Polespear-At the surface? At the bottom? When you see a fish?

If I'm allowed to recant my response to this from a couple years ago, I do. The G-string has totally changed my sequence and method on holding a polespear. I now have my polespear in a semi-loaded position most of the time with the G-String engaged. I don't actually 'fully load' until I am close to target. My hand is still the device that releases the spear after I advance the band forward and disengage the G-string. What a game-changer. . .Watch it in action HERE

Not too long ago, we made some improvements to our resting hook. The current configuration allows you to add or remove the hook with no tools or re-rigging required.

Might be a great "stocking stuffer" .

Re: Loading Polespear-At the surface? At the bottom? When you see a fish?

Now that I've had some more time in on my diy polespear I can add a little to this thread; I installed a rest hook on my spear so I pretty much always load on the surface. I use a single small ID 13mm primeline rubber and while I can't remember the stretch factor it is pretty much as short as it can be and still be loadable.
With all due respect to Mako and Gatku I find the Japanese-style rest hook system offers an advantage: since the loop is secured firmly on the pole and the hook is too on the hand strap it is very easy to hook into the metal loop. With the dyneema loop you have to kinda hold the loop with one hand as you hook in. Not sure I could do that easily while trying to hold a max stretched band. That said, I've only tried the dyneema loop on land when I was building the spear.

Yup:

Using a hand strap makes hooking into the metal loop even easier but should be doable without the hand strap, too. At least one of the two parts wont be moving. A hand strap does loose you some band pull length but it makes it easier for me to hold a higher load, so that should make up for it somewhat.

Pics should be pretty self explanatory, otherwise more info on my build thread:

Re: Loading Polespear-At the surface? At the bottom? When you see a fish?

Folks have been asking me about how I remove the g string and how do the rehook? I made this video to show how simple the action is. If I do not take a shot after detaching the G, I’m usually reattaching during my accent. I have made a step-by-step video of operating the Gstring below:
