heading to the keys and need some input..

Hey there fellow spearos!

I have some family coming in from out of town to celebrate my Bro & Sis-in-law's 15th anniversary. Most of them are divers, although not that experienced. We also will have 2 smallish kids who would enjoy some snorkeling. So, all things considered, we were going to head down to the Keys to take advantage of your numerous lobster and GREAT vis!

We don't have a date set yet, but it will be sometime in Aug(after season opens, of course!!) I have some contacts around the Largo area, but I am open to the possibilities(especially if they include good hunting for me!)

Any input would be appreciated...

Key Largo area is a preserve, you must be out in 600' of water to spearfish, or have spearguns ready in the boat, and South of there, you must be out 3 miles, until past Long Key. 3 miles is the outer edge, where it drops off into deep. Past Long Key you can spear anywhere except inside of preserves with yellow bouys, and near a fishing pier or fishing bridge. Or off Bahia Honda State park. I am not sure how far away you have to be there. Get a Top Spot chart of the area.

I believe you have to be 400ft off Bahia Honda State Park's shore line in order to spearfish.

Not quite as complicated as it seems. Pretty much forget spearfishing off Key Largo. Going south/west almost no reef diving (spearfishing) till you get to Long Key. From Long Key to Key West as long as you are not in a sanctuary area or state park spearing is legal. This is a generalization. FWC's website has a map that is very specific.

Ok, so is lobstering allowed in Largo? My Brother in Law's are looking forward to that and I am willing to give up hunting for a week so they can enjoy themselves.

You can spear and bug in Largo, just stay outa the pennekamp sanctuary and other restricted zones, that are clearly marked.
