The next big Threat to Free Divers?

...A bigger threat to Southern CA divers than occasional shark confrontations may be coming, due to climate warming. Statistically, more people are killed by toxic jellyfish (about 100 a year worldwide) than sharks.
...The bigger threat may be the constant expansion of giant Humbolt squid across the continents and into California. Several scuba divers have described attacks that were vicious and easily could have been fatal. In Mexico, there are several confirmed deaths from squid attacks wherein, the victims were shredded so badly that they were unrecognizable to family members.
...I stuck a Humbolt that approached aggressively out at the twin oil rigs while I was free diving for yellowtail. Others were visible and when they moved toward me, I vacated the water post haste...You don't want that glaring eyeball next to you.
...A typical attack starts like this: One moves in front to attract your attention. It may start flashing red to focus your attention while others move in from behind. They latch on and start pulling their target deeper. They are very difficult to remove and often ram the victim. Lose your mask or run out of air and you may not surface.
...The month of my encounter, all the local charter boat fish counts went to virtually 0 and all the rockfish disappeared, indicating giant squid have a voracious appetite...Here's hoping their Bear Republic visits are few and far between...
