3/17/22: Grunion, Tides and Moon ideal Time for Halibut Hunting

...A grunion run from March 18 thru 21st plus good a.m. high tides will provide better than usual chances for finding a legal-size halibut on Southcoast beaches. Plus, a full moon should aid in helping flatfish fill up on tasty grunion all night. In turn, they may be fully exposed later on sand areas as they lay fat and lazy from all the free chow. Under most conditions, once the sun hits the water, they will bury to hide from predators.
...The day before is good for deeper water as the grunion congregate preparing to go ashore after scouts give the ok. I prefer the 3rd and 4th days of a run, as the outgoing tides earlier carry the scent of the grunion outward to draw in the deeper water flatties up shallow as "word" spreads of the free food. A couple of days past the run can also provide good hunting as halibut stay to eat the dead and dying bait.
...With more shark activity these days, it might be a good idea to string your catch on a float rather than around your waist. If you do string your fish on your waist, make sure it is dead. I learned the hard way when a 32 pounder bit me on the ass up at RPV....
...If you miss this run, the next grunion scheduled arrival is April 1st- 4th and April 16th-19th. Avoid beaches that are lit or have people running around with flashlights. Like people that have been married 30 years, grunion mate in the dark... Good luck

Thanks Bob. Too bad we're still under heavy surf advisory throughout these days...

The latest weather has a small craft advisory for Saturday and Sunday. It will lay down as the week progresses...oh well, there is still April.....
