Re: Mainphrame promised wsb trip report

I've only been up to the Channel Islands a handful of times and I've only spent one night out there, but it was in Smuggler's Cove and it was a hell of a night.

I was on a friend's 26' Skipjack. He had an appropriate sized Bruce anchor and a very long chain (I think it may have been all chain) and he anchored with a lot of scope. A howling wind came up in the middle of the night and we dragged that anchor clear across the cove until we were very close to the beach in the morning.

Because the wind very often does come up late at night, or fails to subside at all, dragging anchor is always on my mind when I anchor out at the islands. I always GPS mark the spot I drop my anchor and then again where the boat settles at rest. That way I can track the flow of the boat throughout the night and see if I am dragging anchor. I get up every hour to check and make sure that we are staying in place. It is not uncommon to find a that we have spun complete circles around our anchor throughout the night. It doesn't make for the best night's sleep, but an alarm beep is a lot more soothing than my hull slamming into the cliffs.

There are no public moorings in the Channel Island National Park islands. Maybe they were talking about the southern islands? A harbor for about every possible swell/squall though if you know what you're doing...(last part is the important part).

Per NPS: http://www.nps.gov/chis/planyourvisit/boating.htm

The only island with public moorings is Catalina, and I like to use them when I can. Its very comforting to know that you are tied down fore and aft and aren't going anywhere during the night.
