Garmin Shaded Relief

Does anyone have any experience using the garmin maps? Especially in northeast Florida? Thinking about getting it to see and compare to cmor.

Re: Garmin Shaded Relief

CMOR is actual high res. Garmin's depth relief shading that you get thru the Navionics Boating app is substantially lower res and almost non-existent in many places. In those places, they use whatever sonar / soundings data they have, and they simulate depth shading with that.

WHere they actually have decent res, you can see ledges pretty good. For example, the bomb holes in Marathon / Big Pine Key area are super clear, like swiss cheese.

Up in the Tampa area by me, there's nothing really available in the areas I spear.

If you upload a google satellite screenshot with the area circled that you're interested in, I can check it out on my app and give you a sample or two.

Garmin may have other offerings that are better, I'm not sure. This is the product that I use - Navionics is owned by Garmin and so it might be the same as whatever you're looking at. It's $39 a year for access on your phone, I think.

Best-case scenario (but most of the waters I fish don't look this good):

Re: Garmin Shaded Relief

I took a snapshot. I grabbed that free trial they provide and it's pretty bad. Only a couple things and doesn't look like much. Looking at NE Florida. Off St Augustine(primarily) /Mayport coast. Approximately 100-140ft of water. That be great if you could check it out and get me a couple shots.

I forgot they had a free trial. Well, yes you're seeing what they have, which is nothing up that way. If you scroll down to the keys and look northeast of Big Pine, there should be some higher-res stuff so you can see what's possible. Here's a screenshot of the area off Jacksonville you were asking about, for curious folks. This is what it looks like when they show relief shading for stuff they don't have high-res data for:

Thanks for looking. Do you think the $250 card is different though?

Have cmor. Coverage is ok. There's still a good chunk with nothing. I know it takes time for all there work. I do like the cmor. It's put a lot of meat and several good Gags in the boat, just going over 50lbs.

Maybe - found this. I think your best bet would be to go to a West Marine or Bass Pro or similar and try to find a unit set up with the chip for demo.
