Scary day

Had a scary trip out to Marquesas this past Saturday. Headed out around ten with beautiful weather ready to fill the boat with lobster and fish but the day had something else in-store for us. We made good time going out and started with a little hook and line and started putting some fish on the boat. Then we started trolling looking for so good reef to dive. Found some good ledges holding a lot of lobsters but it was a mixed bag of eggers, shorts, and only a couple of legal guys. Shot two hogs and then I got back in the boat to find some shallow stuff for my two buddy and are brand new to diving. Start to troll and the motor died right away. Turned out to be a split o-ring on the separator no big deal just by passed it to get us in. Has we headed back in we start hitting patch reef and doing alright just taking our time. And then the sea started picking up and we decided to call it a day and try again on Sunday. 4-6 ft seas made for a slow pace in a 21' cc still no problem till we hit a submerged lobster pot buoy. It it hit prop and then hit one of the hyd. Steering fittings snapping it off now we had a problem 21 miles from Key West with no steering and building seas. OH Shit this could get bad quick. So, I start rigging manual steering as quickly as I could but not before we took a couple of good waves and had a bout a foot of water in the boat. Got two ropes tied around the steering cylinder and one of my buddies and I set on the gunnels hand steering at 4mph, do the the math 5 hours later with on hell of a stiff back we hit the dock. Not what I wanted for a vacation but made for a story.

I'll be back in 6 weeks to try it again luck has to be better this time.

Re: Scary day

shite brother that is hairy!!! glad you had some quick thinking and made it back okay.

I actually had a scare on a friend boat when his bilge quit...fortunately his dad is macguyver and tore apart the live well and used that pump as an emergency bilge.

to be a safe boater you really better know your boat and be a mechanic cos a hell of a lot can go wrong...so where are the fish and bug pics

Congratulations on the quick thinking and jury rig repairs. Your resourcefulness made the difference between life and death. You are a real seaman.

Re: Scary day

Want another shitty but not so bad story?

I went out this Saturday too, I was about 7 miles inside of you on Satan shoal when all my starter would not turn at all with all other electronics on but acting up. Tried for an hour and a half to trouble shoot. Seatow, $500, and two hours later I was home, and completely pissed off.

We got towed in at 26mph though.

Re: Scary day

Wow! Good thing everyone made it back safely... Must've been an adventure story to remember for the two new divers
I think a bunch of ppl had things breaking down on the boat this weekend...
3 things broke down on our boat too but made it back safely to the marina...
we just gotta go through the mission of fixing a bunch of stuff before we go out again this Saturday...

Re: Scary day

I was out at the Marquesas last Saturday too. Had a great day, hogs galore. Remember ya'll aren't alone out there, if ya get in a pickle yell out on ch 16 for any boaters in the area. And you can always call us over at the Coast Guard and ask for a MARB broadcast!

Re: Scary day

We had an 18 pack that was untouched till the seatow call. It was gone at before we docked. That was a two man wrecking crew.

I haven't figured out the problem. Power all the way to the starter. Two new batteries put in the trip before. Everything turns on, GPS, VHF, stereo all 4 weeks old but seatow said the 25 watt VHF couldn't be heard just 1 mile away. Electrical short somewhere.
