Yeah from marathon it is a real short run to cay sal, only about 40 or 50 miles.

Re: Cay sal bank

its not the ride from marathon thats long it clearing customs in cat cay or bimini first .. in the old days you could risk it today a 110 ft coast guard cutter patrols cay sal and they have bahamian officals on board so its a risk without your papers

Re: Cay sal bank

Cal Sal is pristine and beautiful. But since you have to check in at bimini and then go out it takes a lot of fuel and dedication. Because of that, no one goes there, or at least very few. You can get great fishing in other closer places, but there you will find record sized fish and have some of the best diving of your life. I would love do do a trip out there. When are you planning on going?

Re: Cay sal bank

I believe their are cruising permits that allow you to visit places in the Bahamas without checking in.

No, the permit you receive once you check in is good for either 2 or 3 more trips back to the Bahamas within a 2 months time frame. Of course you still have to check in. The Coast Guard patrols the straits of Florida very well and you will almost certainly get caught if you try to do the run without clearing first. Best of luck, it is a long run.
