new to the ocean, but not to spearfishing
Hi!
I've recently relocated to the Bay area, and now seeking for locals who do spearfishing. I've been spearfishing since I was a teenager, but that mostly happened in fresh water. I hunted pike, catfish, carp, walleye and various other freshwater species. So far can boast a 27 kg (59 lbs) catfish I have lots of experience with bad visibility, darkness, logged overhead environments, ice over head, forsaken fishing nets, and all other pleasures. But I was always absolutely sure that I am the top of the food chain in that waters Which is not the case here at the Pacific So, I'm kinda scared going freediving Pacific on my own, and thus seeking for locals who dive, to join them. Learn tactics, locations, regulations, safety measures, what's different about gear, etc. As said, I live in Bay area, but I'm up to driving anywhere in California to join someone. Please PM/email me. Thanks! |

Re: new to the ocean, but not to spearfishing
You're leagues ahead of most guys when they start here. Being eaten is waaaaaay down the list of dangerous things you should worry about. The conditions you described (ice, logs, nets, etc.) are probably more dangerous than anything we run into regularly in California.
My advice is to find a dive club meeting and show up. Talk to folks and as long as you're not a total dork, they will probably be happy to take you out. |

Lot of good diving just a short drive from where you're at...
There is the Triton Open on 4/30 which would be a good place to meet a bunch of divers: http://www.montereybaytritons.com/#!triton-open/c5vq Also check out NorCal Underwater Hunters and NorCal Kayak Anglers (lot of divers on there as well) to meet folks to hook up with: http://norcalunderwaterhunters.com/forum/index.php http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?board=16.0 Hope to see you out there! Sincerely, Jim

Thanks, guys. I'll probably sign up for the Tritons meeting.
When does hunting season start here? Or is it all year round? |

When spearing fish, all year long Abalone is seasonal, and is opening next month. Welcome to the wonderful bay area. Diving in the norcal kelp beds is truly spectacular. |

Glebius your always welcomed to attend one of our Triton club meetings (montereybaytritons.com) and meet our members. We always have a club dive and guest speaker, just a great group of divers. Are schedule is posted on our web site.
April 30 is our annual Triton Open and it's a great event, it's the first official competition of the year and we get a lot of great divers from the different clubs. It is also a great place to meet people, look at gear and kayak set ups. At the BB Q we will definitely put you to work. You'll enjoy the weigh in, It's a lot of fun because you'll get a chance to see all the varieties of fish we hunt. Hope to see you there. Be safe !!

I don't mind a total dork, man, I live in Santa Cruz and dive regularly around Monterey Bay, from Carmel to Santa Cruz. I have a tandem kayak. Any total dorks are welcome to tag along
