My flopper isn't working right

All this rain has got me pinned up in the house. When I'm not at work, I sit at home on the couch looking at my equipment. Sadly, my flopper isn't working the way it should

Can you help me?

hahaha ok I couldn't resist. But really - I lost 2 fish last time out because my flopper is a bit sticky now and doesn't swing freely.

Jesus...I'm barely making it through this post with a straight face haha

So - who can help?

Re: My flopper isn't working right

Pair of standard plier and some gentle work can tune the flopper to swing freely AND lock into the forward position.

DO NOT OVER SQUEEZE ANY PARK OF THE FLOPPER OR YOU WILL DESTROY IT PERMENENTLY.
Check youtube for rob Allen flopper tuning video.

Re: My flopper isn't working right

Start with the Rob Allen youtube tutorials on how to tune a flopper. An additional trick I've found helpful for a flopper that hugs the shaft too tightly is to set a piece of shim stock between the flopper and the shaft (aluminum foil folded over 2-3 times works if you don't have any thicker shim stock on hand), then lightly tap the flopper down over the shaft and foil. This will open the flopper up a slight amount very easily.

Re: My flopper isn't working right

floppers are a bad choice for any gamefish in my opinion..if a chunk of flesh jams in the hinge area, it won't open and you lose the fish...if the pin bends a little under pressure, it also can prevent opening or let the flopper wing work loose from the pin and fall off...back to your question...I tightly wrap a simple rubber band behind the double floppers on my halibut gun...it pushes the flopper wings out each time to toggle properly but, also compresses sufficiently to allow the wings to go thru the fish without much drag...

Re: My flopper isn't working right

Just donate your Riffe to me for Christmas and use the Pathos. I'll make sure your Riffe finds a good home on CL lol

it's on my riffe. I'll fiddle with it tonight. Last final of the semester tonight, then no school and off work through 5-Jan. Excited to take the pathos out, but the weather needs to play nice =)

Ask Lompoc Local. He is the resident expert on floppers here. He has shot some HUGE fish with floppers including some 50lb+ seabass. He is full of info on that subject and much, much more.

Oh wait! He's banned. nvm

Re: My flopper isn't working right

go the lobes at then end of the flopper and pull them apart slightly with pliers untill it :flops: freely.

now close the flopper and invert it, and place the top most part of the flopper above the retaining pin in a bench vice or vice grips.

pinch the top of the flopper untill it sticks when it flops into the open position.

should close easily but stay open when your fighting a fish.

congrats, your flopper is tuned
