mares viper pro...any good???

Just wondering what everyone's thoughts were. Looks like a solid build. How does it compare to something like a Rob Allen?
Any input is greatly appreciated

I don't know what your use is. My buddy used one I think - once.
Try talking to Dave Hochman.

I haven't used one but I've held them in my hands.
they are a true euro gun that shoots a small shaft.
it would be a great gun for small reef fish 15 pounds max, anything bigger than that and the rob allen greatly shines over the mares

Re: mares viper pro...any good???

Hi guys,
I preface this with I'm a sales manager for Mares, so I obviously endorse our products. Having said that, the Viper Pro is a fantastic gun. It shoots incredibly fast and accurate. Not to mention it comes with a reel, which makes it a terrific value compared to some of the other fine guns out in the market.
I agree it is a "euro" gun, however I disagree that it's limitations are subject to 15lbs max. I also manage our U.S. spearfishing team of athletes and I've attached a couple of images to show that the Viper Pro can yield results larger than 15lbs. All fish in attached images were taken with a Viper Pro of various sizes.

Best regards,
Zak

I bet Hochman's put quite a few 50 pound bass in the cooler with his Mares.
What thickness shaft can it take?

Re: mares viper pro...any good???

Viper Pro comes stock with a 7mm shaft. I haven't heard from others trying a thicker shaft so I can't speak from experience. Note: to date, I haven't heard anyone complain about the 7mm shaft though. Obviously it may not be the best for truly big game ie: Tuna, Marlin, etc.. it is very adequate for most fishing though.

Yes, Hochman is very busy using his Mares equipment. See pic of bass lined up on the deck of his boat.

Best,
Zak

Re: mares viper pro...any good???

I personally own a Mares Viper Pro 120. It is built with nice features comparable to guns priced double. For starters stainless line release, adjustable trigger, option of closed or open muzzle, full rail. I love it! Shoots like a laser. I pull hefty groupers of the bottom no problem.
